The Office of the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen concluded on the 29th of March a two-day consultation with Yemeni women and men in Cairo, Egypt, on their vision and priorities for inclusive peace. The participants exchanged views on the challenges and opportunities related to gender inclusion in the peace process and women’s participation in public and political life in Yemen. Discussions also focused on the potential space for men to advocate for gender inclusion in decision-making processes in Yemen.
The consultative meeting builds on the outcomes of similar discussions organized in Aden and Sana’a over the course of the past six months. The meeting brought together diverse participants representing women’s groups, civil society organizations, and political parties.
In Cairo, participants stressed the paramount significance of women’s meaningful participation in all stages of the political process and in building Yemen’s future. They discussed existing challenges to ensuring inclusivity in ongoing mediation efforts and highlighted the potential impact of local initiatives and the role that different stakeholders can play in strengthening inclusion in Yemen’s transition to peace.
